Writing Center Policies for Online Tutoring
Writing Center Policies for Online Tutoring
1. You MUST have an active STUDENT I.D. NUMBER to use the online tutoring service.
2. Using the Online Tutoring service involves two parts:
- Part 1: Make an online tutoring appointment.
- Part 2: Email your paper, details about your assignment, and questions to an online tutor.
You may make an appointment by clicking on the following link:
https://esars.sbccd.org/V_WritingCtr/eSARS.asp
After you have made your appointment, you will need to email your paper, assignment, and questions to the online tutor. For instructions on how to email the online tutor, click on the following link:
3. All tutoring sessions are set at one half an hour session per day with a maximum of three sessions per week per assignment/subject regardless if they are by appointment or drop-in. Tutoring sessions may be extended up to a maximum of one hour per day at the discretion of the tutor and/or lead instructor. For instance, if a student makes an appointment for an English assignment, the student may make another appointment for a history paper for the same day.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If a student has had a paper/assignment reviewed by the Writing Center, the student needs to make substantial revisions based on the comments made by the tutor before resubmitting the paper again for review. Failure to do so, may result in the paper being returned to request for revisions to be made.
During the last two weeks of the semester, students may be limited to only one half hour session with a tutor per day with a maximum of two sessions for the week regardless of whether it is by appointment or as a drop-in.
4. Students without an appointment are considered as drop-ins. Drop-ins are assisted on a first-come-first-served basis and may or may not be assisted depending on tutor availability. Drop-ins should receive their papers between 24 to 48 hours of emailing them to the online tutor. In order to be guaranteed assistance, it is highly recommended that students make an appointment to have their paper reviewed by a tutor. To make an appointment, click on the following link (Online Tutoring - PART 1).
NOTE: Zoom appointments are not available with drop-in sessions. If you wish to be assisted online via Zoom, it is recommended that you make an appointment to work with a tutor. If you have an appointment, you may indicate the way that you wish to be tutored.
5. Students who make appointments but do not make contact either by email or Zoom with their tutor two or more times during the semester/summer sessions will be marked as a no-show and may be limited to drop-in tutoring only.
6. You MUST be ready to work with your tutor at the time of your scheduled Zoom session.
To make the most of your tutoring session, you are encouraged to have the following items available when you work with your tutor: questions that you may have about your assignment; your assignment; books, notes or articles about your assignment; your course syllabus; as well as any drafts of your paper.
7. In order to receive tutor verification, you must work with a tutor for 25 to 30 minutes if you would like the tutor to assist you via Zoom. A verification slip can come in the form of a tutor reply email indicating that your paper has been reviewed by the Writing Center and/or Online Tutoring service.
8. If you need to cancel an appointment, click on the following link and log-on to the appointment webpage:
https://esars.sbccd.org/V_WritingCtr/eSARS.asp
Then click the View or Cancel Appointments button and follow the prompts provided to cancel your appointment.
As a friendly reminder, appointments cannot be scheduled or cancelled over the phone.
9. Tutoring sessions are typically one-on-one.
10. Tutors may only assist students with material as it relates to San Bernardino Valley College and/or Crafton Hills College coursework, personal statements for scholarship applications, and/or personal statements for college applications.
However, the Writing Center DOES NOT assist students with quizzes, tests/exams and/or other types of course activities that require students to demonstrate their own comprehension or understanding of course material unless assistance has been approved by their instructor(s).
11. Anyone acting inappropriately (such as but not limited to yelling, cursing or displying hostility), or showing inappropriate content during tutoring/workshop sessions, either by email or Zoom may lose tutoring privileges.
