Student Rights and Responsibilities
Student Rights
- Choice
- Participation in Student Accessibility Services (SAS) shall be entirely voluntary.
- Inclusion
- Receiving support services or instruction through SAS shall not preclude a student from also participating in any other course, program or activity offered by the college or from receiving basic accommodations required by state and federal law.
- Confidentiality
- All records maintained by SAS pertaining to a student’s disability(ies) shall be protected from disclosure and shall be subject to all other requirements pertaining to the handling of student records. In general, any document identified as a student record is governed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Non-discrimination
- A student may file an appeal if the student feels he/she has been denied adequate or appropriate accommodations or has been discriminated against on the basis of disability.
Student Responsibilities
- Provide SAS with the necessary information, documentation, and/or required forms (medical, educational, etc.) verifying the student’s disability(ies).
- Meet with an SAS counselor, learning disabilities specialist, or director (hereafter referred to as a counseling appointment) to complete an initial Academic Accommodation Plan (AAP). Students must also complete a counseling appointment each additional semester to ensure that accommodations and services are in place. Accommodations and services will be available to you for any given semester only after you have completed your required counseling appointment for that semester.
- Notify SAS of any changes in services or accommodations needed. Changes may include, but are not limited to, absence from a class in which services are provided; added, dropped, or canceled class; change of day/time/location of class; or cancellation of scheduled counseling, learning disability assessment or testing accommodation appointments.
- When appropriate, inform instructors, in a timely manner, of approved adjustments, services, or accommodations provided within the student’s AAP.
- Notify a SAS counselor, learning disabilities specialist or director if an accommodation or service is ineffective or unnecessary.
- Use SAS in a responsible manner and adhere to the policies and procedures for continuation of services.
- Comply with the Student Code of Conduct adopted by the College.
- Demonstrate measurable progress toward academic goals and meet the academic standards established by the college.
