picture of pipes and valves from under a buildingStarting in 2012, SBVC will begin a two-year project that will link all campus energy consumption into one controlled system—also called the Central Plant Project. SBVC’s campus contains more than 20 buildings that feature unique heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. To maximize efficiency across the campus, the new Central Plant will provide controls for managing usage and energy that will save millions of dollars over the next decade.

Title 24 refers to the California Code of Regulations for energy usage. First established in 1978 in response to a legislative mandate to reduce California’s energy consumption, the standards are updated periodically to allow consideration and possible incorporation of new energy efficiency technologies and methods. California’s standards (including those for appliances) have saved more than $56 billion in electricity and natural gas costs since 1978. It is estimated that the standards will save an additional $23 billion by 2013.

According to projections, 20% less energy will be used once the Physical Sciences building is connected to the new Central Plant. Once the PS building is connected, energy savings will will exceed Title 24 regulations by 14%.
