Week of June 9, 2025
Greetings, Wolverines!
Happy Pride Month! While we are pausing the Wolverine Weekly for the summer, we are excited to release the first edition of the SBVC Summer Scoop! Our College remains vibrant during the summer months and the Summer Scoop will provide regular updates.
Last week, you may have noticed some loud noises and some shaking near North Hall and the Library. The demolition of the LA Building is underway. Thanks for your flexibility and support as we continue with the facilities improvements on campus.
Here’s what’s happening this week and beyond:
1. THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL CLASSIFIED APPRECIATION EVENT!
A heartfelt thank you to John Feist, Erik Morden, the Classified Senate, and all of the managers who helped make the Classified Softball Game, Bingo, and the BBQ on May 30 a success. It was a pleasure to help serve food to our classified professionals and see the camaraderie and real-time connections happening across our campus community. Thank you for making this tradition such a memorable celebration of the incredible contributions of our classified professionals!
2. DARE-TO-DREAM FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN
Our Dreamers Resource Center is excited to announce that applications for the Dare-to-Dream Fellowship are now open! This structured, paid fellowship is designed specifically for undocumented students, providing professional development opportunities and helping to reduce financial barriers. Applications are open through June 16. Spread the word! The flyer for this fellowship is attached.
3. FTVM ALUMNI MAKING WAVES
Congratulations to our Film, Television, and Media (FTVM) alumni! Three graduates -- Daniel Saldana (adjunct for FTVM), Nic Van Luven (FTVM lab tech and adjunct), and Monet Sprague (Class of 2023) -- ran cameras for an upcoming documentary about the Cherry Tree Musical Company, covering headlining acts that included Sting and Shaggy.
- Monet is finishing her undergraduate studies in Film at CSU Northridge.
- Nic will teach his first class as an adjunct faculty member this fall.
- Daniel continues to lead our new noncredit Grip and Lighting course, made possible with Strong Workforce funding.
We are proud to see our FTVM alumni showcasing their talents on major projects and giving back to the next generation of students!
4. SBVC REPRESENTED AT INLAND ACTION PARTNERSHIP
On June 3, I represented SBVC at the Inland Action Partnership, presenting to regional business leaders about the college’s growing impact and initiatives. It was an honor to share the role of Valley College in the community for 100 years and the impact of the community at Valley College for the last century. In a room full of IE leaders, Valley College holds a special place among the institutions advancing excellence for the community. Thank you for the work you do that makes it easy to share SBVC’s story!
5. DEN2DEN STUDENT HOUSING OPPORTUNITY
Also on June 3, members of the SBVC leadership team toured the CSUSB housing being made available to SBVC students through the Den2Den Housing Pathway Program. Spots are limited, so please encourage students who need housing to apply now: www.valleycollege.edu/den2den
6. SAVE THE DATE: JUNETEENTH JAM 2025 - JUNE 18
Join us for the Juneteenth Jam on Tuesday, June 18 on the Greek Theater Lawn! Bring your blankets, chairs, and friends for a day of music, food, community, and celebration! The attached flyer has more information.
This morning, I was excited to join Coach James Griffin for the Valley College Football summer orientation. More than 85 student-athletes filled the room. It’s going to be an exciting year of Valley College Football. We hope to see you all at one of our home games (and pre-game tailgate receptions).
Please also remember to send in your highlights so that we can consider them for inclusion here in the SBVC Summer Scoop!
With appreciation,
Valley Up!
